Well, that’s pretty gorram cute.

Last night I went over to a friend’s house (hello, Miranda & Troy!) to watch Firefly. If you don’t know what Firefly is, GTFO.

Just kidding. Stick around; you’ll learn to love it.

I’ve been planning for some time to make Doctor Who and Firefly characters for my friends. Unfortunately, I’ve been too busy (lazy) to begin such a taxing project. As I mentioned in my last post, now that summer classes are over and all I have left is a couple papers (that I should be writing right now) I have a little more time to knit/crochet.

Anyway, back to last night: I brought some yarn to start something AMAZING. We watched the 90-minute unaired pilot of Firefly (“Serenity”) and I started crocheting, using the basic pattern in Creepy Cute Crochet with some of my own alterations.

I know I told you to “GTFO” if you didn’t know what Firefly was, but here’s the lowdown–
Two words: Space western.
Firefly had a 14-episode run on FOX in 2002. I didn’t watch it then, mostly because I hadn’t heard of it, I was 14 and watched what my family watched, and the reception for FOX wasn’t that great in our house. It was created by Joss Whedon, the genius behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and Dollhouse (another FOX-canceled show).

Firefly is about a crew of 9 people aboard a Firefly-class spaceship called “Serenity” (which is also the name of the 2005 movie that followed the cancellation of this beloved show). It occurs about 500 years in the future. In this future, humanity has emigrated to terraformed planets and moons. Also important: primary languages in the 26th century are Mandarin and English. The crew is made up of Mal Reynolds, captain; Zoe Washburne, second-in-command; Hoban “Wash” Washburne, pilot & Zoe’s husband; Jayne Cobb, public relations…just kidding, he’s a mercenary of sorts; Kaylee, mechanic; Inara, a “companion” (a bit like an escort); Shepherd Book, 26th century pastor; Simon Tam, doctor; and River Tam, bad-ass genius sister of Simon. They go on miscellaneous adventures including heists, escaping the Alliance, and shindigs. It was a pretty legit show.

“Why was it canceled?” you may ask. BECAUSE FOX HATES YOUR HAPPINESS. Need another example?  Arrested Development. Who doesn’t love Arrested Development?! COME ON!

(I wish there was a better quality version of this)

Why was it really canceled? Wikipedia says it was because it had low ratings. I don’t know diddlysquat about TV ratings, but I say something is wrong when mindless TV shows can go on for decades, but really solid, funny shows get canceled.

Wait, what’s this blog about? Riiiiight, knitting and other sundries. While watching Firefly, I came up with this:

ADORABLE, if I may say so myself. I know it’s not perfect and his lack of limbs is somewhat disturbing, but I LIKE IT and that’s what counts.

Little known fact*, the CEOs at FOX also participate in competitive puppy kicking.

I happen to know that it DID have low rating–but this MIGHT have had something to do with the fact that 1) fox continually changed it’s airing dates 2) failed to air things in order, and ergo it did not make ANY sense. We own it and have it all on DVD. LOVE. check out “Castle” and the halloween episode from this year for a little Nathan Fillon shout out to Firefly 😀

I love when my favorite TV shows make references to each other! I don’t remember what happened in the rest of the episode, but I remember Alexis saying, “There are no cows in space.”
